D-Day in Canterbury
Last Wednesday, I was lucky enough to be asked to go to Canterbury High School as part of BIMA's D-Day - BIMA are the British Interactive Media Association and the 'D' stands for 'Digital'.
The idea of D-Day was simple and digital agencies from across the country signed up to send staff to their local schools to work on interesting Digital Challenges.
The children at Canterbury High School chose to take part in two challenges -- Digital Design and Mobile Apps.
A group of children on the Digital Design challenge worked up ideas on how to make a smartphone dock for a fridge, the idea being that the smartphone would be able to help people eat more healthily by planning meals and shopping trips around a social network of people sharing healthy-living recipes, complete with video guides and dietary information.
Another group working on the Mobile Apps challenge designed an application to help pet owners track their pets.
Both groups worked hard and came up with more ideas than we had time to play with in a single day.
The most interesting thing for me was how many times one of the children stopped themselves from saying something with the words, "... No, that would be stupid..." Invariably, these would either be great ideas or, even more often, something that somebody has already built somewhere and is making millions from.
Deeson will definitely be sending somebody back next year if BIMA decide to do something similar again as it was a fantastic day. We're looking forward to seeing the children from Canterbury High at #digibury when they're old enough!
