Project Conway #4 - Game of Life display

By Lizzie Hodgson | 15th February 2014

We've been blogging about Project Conway, our innovative collaboration with the University of Kent’s TinkerSoc and School of Computing, for a couple of months now.

The idea behind it is to create an art installation that will ultimately be showcased by The Beaney House of Art and Knowledge in Canterbury.

The installation itself is a large display panel with a series of LEDs that will show the simulation developed by John Conway called the Game of Life. This will also connect up to our Little Printer, which will print out the 'obituary' of each life cycle, triggered by members of the general public and school kids via a web interface.

What will the installation look like?

The main focus so far has been on the tech and dev side but now we can share the hardware build side.

PhD research student and President of Tinkersoc, Daniel Knox, has been overseeing the students software build, while managing the 'hardware' build of the actual installation. In this video, we see how build has progressed and catch glimpse of what the final product will look like.

Save the date! Digibury: March 12 - the big reveal

We'll be presenting the final Project Conway on March 12 at The Gulbenkian for a special Digibury when we plan to hold a discussion about the collision of art, technology and all things digital. It should be an interesting evening!
